2. Premium IOL

There has never been a better time to improve your quality of vision. Modern day cataract surgery is
evolving from a visual restorative to a refractive procedure. The latest addition to the armentarium of
cataract surgery are the premium IOLs.
At MPEH, we offer a wide range of premium IOLs that can meet the unique needs of each of our
patients.
Toric IOLs
These are recommended for patients with astigmatism. Astigmatism means that the shape of your eye is
more irregular than normal. These IOLs help to neutralize the irregularity of the eye.
1.8 mm Microincision Premium IOLs
Conventional cataract surgery (phacoemulsification) uses a larger incision as compared to Micro-incision
Cataract Surgery (MICS). At MPEH, we use 1.8 mm incision for optimal visual outcome. Advantages of
MICS include safer surgery, faster healing, faster visual recovery, less need for glasses after surgery and
fewer follow-up visits. Any person with any grade of cataract is suitable for MICS. This technology is
particularly beneficial for diabetic patients, elderly and in patients with other systemic co-morbidities
because of the added advantage of faster healing.
Monofocal IOLs With Extended Depth Of Focus
Intermediate visual acuity is very important for daily life activities. These are newer generation
monofocal IOLs which improves intermediate vision, while distance vision remains similar to that
achieved with a standard monofocal IOL. These IOLs extends the depth of focus. While patients with
these lenses may need reading glasses, they have clear vision for almost all everyday activities that don’t
require close focus. These activities range from using the computer or watching TV to driving, shopping,
walking and cooking. These IOLs are perfect for anyone who wants the most out of cataract surgery
without having to pay out of pocket for ultra-premium IOLs. If you don’t mind using reading glasses on
occasion and having great vision the rest of the time, you may want to consider these IOLs.
Multifocal IOLs / Continuous Range Vision IOLs
These IOLs restore the visual function and reduce or eliminate the need to wear corrective spectacles.
These IOLs can treat cataract while improving distance, intermediate and near vision. However, patients
should be aware of the fact that there is no absolute guarantee of spectacle freedom. Apparent
drawbacks of these IOLs include glare, haloes and a decrease in contrast sensitivity. A good candidate
for these IOLs is someone who has an easy-going, laid-back personality, is not very particular about their
vision and is motivated to see at near without glasses. A typical good candidate for such IOLs include
housewives.

13. Low Vision Aid

A significant visual impairment that cannot be corrected fully with glasses, contact lenses, medications
or eye surgery is termed as low vision.
It is caused by severe eye diseases that include macular degenerations, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma,
retinitis pigmentosa, eye injuries and optic neuropathies.
Patients with low vision can find it difficult to perform everyday activities like driving, reading or
recognising faces.
Sadly, many patients are told that there is nothing to be done, resulting in a loss of hope in addition to
their loss of independence.
LVAs are most suitable for patients who struggle with day to day tasks because of poor vision.
Fortunately, we at MPEH offer a wide range of LVAs that help such patients to regain their confidence,
independence and improve their quality of life.
The success of these devices is well – documented.
The most common of these devices are “Near” optical devices, that are used for close – up, detail
viewing, such as reading, writing and sewing.
Such devices include :
1) Stand – Magnifiers : When placed on the page, this type of magnifier is automatically in focus
for reading
2) Hand – Held Magnifiers : A hand – held magnifier is especially useful for brief “spot” reading and
for portable used such as reading a menu in a restaurant, prices or labels in a store. They can be
either in full size or a small pocket magnifier, and can also have a built – in bright light.
